The roof was on fire at the agency, Makeway last night! It was soon put out with the rain, but that didn't stop the party from going on from the inside. Thanks to Greg Cunneyworth and Josh Lowery of Makeway for hosting the first AAF Columbus AdFun party of the summer! Lively crowd made it a great night to be a creative in Columbus.

The Power of Storytelling - Columbus CEO magazine

The Power of Storytelling is the title of Mary Yost's Editor's notes in the July issue of Columbus CEO magazine which featured a conversation that Mary and I had about storytelling in my business.

An excerpt:

"Even consultant Chris Cochran has turned to storytelling to build his business, Cochran Executive Search. Cochran candidly concedes that his monthly e-newsletters won't reach a receptive audience if he focuses entirely on himself and what he does. But storytelling, he says, allows him to demonstrate that he knows people, that he knows them well and he may 'know people who you don't know.' He also sees another benefit in good storytelling: Sometimes it's the difference between the candidate who lands the job and who doesn't. Cochran says he's learned in 20 years of recruiting, 'Through storytelling you can build trust. Those who can tell stories, they attract others to them. It's human nature.'"

Columbus State - Marketing Industry Forum

This morning I enjoyed talking with the Columbus State Marketing Program faculty led by Carmen Daniels, Chairperson, Business Programs Department. We shared ideas about trends in marketing that could translate to possible course curriculum for their students. In my 20 years of recruiting, I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to take part in programs and projects that benefit students in one way or another.

Creative Mornings - Survival

Today, there was another great program from Creative Mornings/Columbus that featured Doug Ulman, CEO of Pelotonia. He shared the story of Columbia, MD and how it was a planned community created and developed by James Rouse. Rouse had the idea of creating "intentional collisions" to foster a community that was intended to eliminate racial, religious and class segregation. One example of the planning to bring people together, intentionally, was the mail boxes all being placed in one location that required residents to collide when they went to get their mail. Our communities are not only strengthened by such thinking, they increase our chances of survival. The intentional collisions idea produces similarities to my Hire Learning Leadership program and the intentional networking that leaders should create both online and with the attending of events to create connections that benefit their careers and organizations.
