DRAC - Downtown Residents Association of Columbus

The Downtown Residents Association of Columbus held their monthly meeting last night at the Southern Theater. Quite a few of the members, over appetizers and cocktails following the speakers and the tour of the theater, that it was a “good one.” After getting to hear about the happenings around downtown, German Village news and the history of the theater (including the tour), I agree that it was a “good one.”

The description of last night’s event along with info about the organization:

We are excited to announce our much anticipated October DRAC Event, an evening at the Southern Theatre and Westin Whiskey Bar with the Jazz Arts Group.

Our evening will begin in the beautiful Southern Theatre where our check-in table will be available beginning at 6:15 PM. Located at 21 E Main St, our Membership team will be waiting to greet you right inside the theater.

Arrive early and take advantage of happy hour pricing in Westin's new Whiskey Bar inside the stunning lobby of the Westin. Adjacent to the Southern, our hosts will open the doors to the lobby where we are welcome to enjoy the ambiance or a flight of Whiskey from anywhere in the world.

Our meeting will begin promptly at 6:50 under the chandeliers and elegance of the Great Southern Theatre. Opening on September 21, 1896 the Southern is the oldest surviving theater in Columbus. During our business meeting we will hear from Kim Goodman from JAG, the Jazz Arts Group, which is one of the groups who call the Southern Theatre home. We will then have the privilege of hearing from Michael R Hurwitz, historian and documentarian and author. Michael will be giving us a tour of the theater and sharing stories from his documentary about the theater "The Great Southern Theatre, Revival of a Legend.” It is an exciting time for JAG as they will be starting their brand new season the day after our visit.

After our tour we will move onto the stately Westin for time in their Whiskey Bar and lobby. Enjoy sounds of the Jazz Arts Group and 1940s swing while sampling some of the fabulous food available at Westin private events. We will hear from Tom Graffeo, Director of Food and Beverage with some great behind the scenes information about the Hotel and its significant place in Columbus history.

To wrap up our splendid evening our hosts and business members have donated terrific raffle items, including tickets to opening night of the new JAG season, CD's, DVD's and more. We will have our raffle at 8:45, and all are welcome to stay in the Whiskey Bar for beverages after.

Come and feel the elegance of these Columbus treasures, learn more about the history of the downtown we love, and enjoy socializing with your neighbors. Sounds fancy but please come as comfortable or sophisticated as you prefer. We look forward to seeing you!
